Last month I had the pleasure of revealing this beautiful cover to you. Now, I have the even greater pleasure of being a part of the review tour. I still think it’s the most adorable cover ever, and I’m excited that the holiday season is right around the corner.
Here is a little about the book:
A Typical Family Christmas
For once, Kate Peters would like a happy, family Christmas; the kind of Christmas seen in the movies. She wants harmony and happiness, smiling, glowing faces, tables groaning with food, carol singing around the tree. She wants love, kindness, and goodwill to all men, especially in her own house.
What she doesn’t want is drama. Absolutely no drama, whatsoever.
But what she gets is three stroppy children, two equally stroppy grandmothers, a husband who can’t manage to change a lightbulb, and Pepe the poodle.
It’s no wonder she feels unappreciated, overworked, and ignored. At the end of her tinsel-coated tether, and with the only Christmas spirit being in the form of a bottle of raspberry gin, Kate decides to leave them to it, and see how they manage without her.
A quiet little hotel somewhere near the sea, where she can pretend Christmas doesn’t exist, is just the thing she needs. Isn’t it?
If I were a Christmas book, this one would be it. The title alone just describes what is always expected at a holiday family gathering for me. As much as you try, and you go into it every year thinking “this one will be different” it never fails. The only difference that actually does occur is that this time it was actually worse than the last! Liz Davies must have been reading my mind, because a quiet little hotel alone for the holidays seems like the perfect thing, right?
Kate is your typical family mom, taking care of her teenage obnoxious children and the typical surmising husband. The holidays have arrived and her mother-in-law is coming for her usual family visit, which is stressful enough until her own mother decides to visit and stay at Kate’s home as well (and bring her dog). Of course these two do not get along at all, so increased havoc ensues, with all the work and organization and cooking sitting on a pile right on Kate’s lap. When Kate reaches her limit of demands and bickering, she decides to act on a suggestion made by a friend, to take a few days to herself and go to a seaside town for Christmas, leaving her family to discover how important Kate really is.
This story is hilarious. There is not a moment that occurs that each and every one of us won’t recognize from a family gathering of our own. The best part of this one is that you are sitting on the outside looking in, so you are able to laugh out loud at all the calamitous events happening, without having your own family getting mad at you for snickering in the corner while they fight. The characters are so well done, with all their quirks and idiosyncrasies, and are so realistic, it makes you wonder who Liz Davies may have used as her inspiration when coming up with each one.
You are going to find yourself totally relating to this book, laughing aloud, becoming angry, and ultimately having that overjoying cozy Christmas feeling when all is said and done. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I am so glad to have found Liz Davies. Solid 4 stars for another wonderful novel.
Thank you so much to Liz Davies, Rachel Gilbey from Rachels Random Resources for a copy of this book for my honest and unbiased opinion.
About the Author
She’s married to her best friend, has one grown-up daughter, and when she isn’t scribbling away in the notepad she carries with her everywhere (just in case inspiration strikes), you’ll find her searching for that perfect pair of shoes. She loves to cook but isn’t very good at it, and loves to eat – she’s much better at that! Liz also enjoys walking (preferably on the flat), cycling (also on the flat), and lots of sitting around in the garden on warm, sunny days.
She currently lives with her family in Wales, but would ideally love to buy a camper van and travel the world in it.
