This is where you put strong emphasis on the word PSYCHO in psychological thriller. To use her own words, the author (Samantha Downing) has a very “disturbed” mind. Truth be told, I am outright JEALOUS. Where in the world does one come up with these things?????
My Lovely Wife is the story of a married couple who live the good life, with a beautiful home, satisfying jobs, exceptional children, first-rate friends in a first-class community. The only difference is that they have secretly become serial killers just to thwart marital boredom.
When you embark on the journey that is this book, the only information you know going in is that apparently this married couple keep their marriage alive by getting away with murder. That’s it, nothing more. There’s not a tidbit found anywhere that explains what this novel is about, we all kind of picked it up blindly, without a clue about what we were about to get into. You have to admit, the marketing was phenomenal. The story is told from the husbands point of view. Other than his secret murder name, we really never find out what his name is, not that its important, but I just wanted to throw that out there. We become invested in this mans life, how he met his wife Millicent, how they fell in love, got married and had children. All of this background information alternates between the present time, while our narrator tells us about himself and Millicent, choosing the next victim, and their previous murders. It progresses from there.
I will stop here. If I continue any further it defeats the purpose. It will ruin the story. This is why they didn’t tell us any more, and it was magnificent. Yes, I left out a TON.
The entire story itself is captivating. I can honestly say that you really have no idea where this story is going and what is going to happen but you absolutely do not want to put this book down at any cost. When the shoe does drop, oh and it does drop…. I guarantee you will not in any way have seen any of this coming. There are multiple times I said WOAH out loud to myself. There are multiple times I yelled directly at the book. Let me tell you one thing, someone in this book is a WACKO and needs some serious intervention (you will know who I mean after you read it, no spoilers).
Here’s why I only gave it 4.5 stars. This book was fascinating, I highly recommend it and as psychological thrillers go, this one definitely hits the mark. I will be raving about it for a long time. But there were a few things that because of my strong medical background, I guessed beforehand, and I feel like that gave me an advantage in the “guessing game” and pushed me in the right direction on who was who in the scheme of things. I also found the Epilogue to be a bit corny. I feel like after all that hard work by the author, she could have wrapped it up a little less sappy than she did.
I give Ms. Downing high laurels for this novel, especially being her first. This is going to be a hard one to outdo. My Lovely Wife was disturbingly engrossing, truly one of a kind, and creates a whole new level to this genre.
